Whales:
Fascinating lives, families and futures
Humans have been fascinated by whales for millennia, perplexed by how they live, breathe, feed, raise young, and live in complex social and family structures. They’re a long-lost cousin from a different world. Interestingly, humans and whales share a similar response to holding their breath while diving, known as the mammalian dive response.
Despite this fascination, humans have exploited whales in many ways — interrupting the natural order, impacting unique and delicate life cycles, taking their lives in the name of science, and destroying the very environment whales call home. Entire species were nearly annihilated.
Like other towns on the South Coast of NSW, Jervis Bay has a bleak past involving whaling and the exploitation of its marine life and resources. However, things have improved significantly. Conservationists have worked tirelessly, and the global mindset has shifted, resulting in a reduction in human impact on whales. Additionally, there has been a shift from resource extraction to eco-tourism over the past few decades.

PLEASE READ THIS FINE PRINT: This is a physically strenuous tour with deep-water activity. It may involve a lot of swimming, with over 100 metres of water below. For your safety, you must be a confident and comfortable swimmer with snorkelling experience — and able to swim 200 metres unassisted. A positive attitude and willingness to put yourself out of your comfort zone is a must. This experience is conducted with full consideration of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016, Under the NSW Department of Primary Industries Permit number MEAA20/204.
*No guarantees
While whales are curious by nature, and it’s an undeniable privilege to witness these gentle giants up close and in the water, an interaction cannot be forced or guaranteed. It’s of the utmost importance to remain respectful at all times, allowing the animals to interact with us … on their terms, not ours.
Respect, preservation and safety.
That’s our mantra.
In a world full of impact, choosing a reputable, local, and experienced tour operator makes a world of difference—especially in our oceans.
We are real conservationists, fierce wildlife advocates, and proud to be the first free-dive partner of Sea Shepherd Australia.

Our vision is a future where we live in harmony with the natural world. When done in a considered and responsible way, eco-tourism is a perfect platform to develop this symbiosis — where humankind and the natural world look after each other.
“Our lives as land mammals are fundamentally tied to the sea, and at this critical time in the world’s history — when humans are taking more from the earth than it can give us — we owe it to the sea to appreciate and try to understand it.
Learning about the worlds fascinating cetaceans — those intelligent, complex, sometimes caring, sometimes ferocious, deep-diving, travelling mammals of the sea — allows us to examine our interconnection with the world’s waters, and the life within it.”
